Kata in Action: A Powerful System for Managing Improvement
Kata, applied originally in manufacturing by Toyota, is used to establish a disciplined means for improving, adapting and innovating. A kata is a small, well-structured protocol or routine that becomes second nature through practice, and brings about the development of a particular skill. The point of the kata is not the memorization of the routines, but rather is the habits of thought and action that practicing them leaves behind. In contrast to approaches that attempt to predict the path and focus on implementation, Kata builds on discovery that occurs along the way.
This half day workshop defines Kata and demonstrates the use of this powerful system for managing change and improvement. The workshop participants will practice using Kata during a multiple round, problem solving ‘game’ that demonstrates how Kata can be used to proceed through unclear territory without fear of obstacles, changes and unknowns. Teams use the Kata system to learn as they strive to reach a target condition, and adapt based on what they are learning.
